The Saving Game
(A drama about finding salvation)

Director's Notes:
This is a drama I wrote with my son Lucas. The teens are putting on the service next month and he wanted to do a drama with 6 other teens. The goal was to show that people have a lot of notions on what it takes to be saved and get into heaven. This drama uses the premise of setting it in the popular game show from the 70s.

Jim: the guy who is trying to find a savior
Pat: Host of the show

(LIGHTS UP CENTER STAGE. Jim is sitting on the left and the saviors on the right. A wall separates them. Cue music.)

Pat:   Welcome back to the Savior Game. We’re here with Jim Carpenter, a freshman from Albemarle High School. Jim is looking for a way to heaven and is hoping that one of our 5 saviors can lead him there. Let’s say hello to Jim. Hi, Jim. Tell us a little about yourself.

Jim:  Well, Pat, I’m just your typical honor student. I like video games, acting and getting good grades.

Pat:  Hey that sounds great. What are you hoping to find in one of our saviors today?

Jim:  Well, I’m just looking for the truth.

Pat:   Oh yeah? Sounds good. Okay, you know how this is played. First, you can ask any savior a question. Second, you can ask them any question you want. Third, you only get 1 question for each savior. Finally, after you’ve asked all your questions, you have to pick a savior.

Jim: Sounds great. Let’s get started!

Pat: Okay. Let’s play the Savior game! (cue music)

Jim: Savior #1, “How do I become saved?”

Savior #1: Well, there is a LOT of stuff you have to do. Like Reading the Bible.

Jim: Okay, how much do I need to read?

Savior #1: The entire thing. All 66 books. Forwards and backwards, front to back. Genesis to Revelation.

Jim: Wow. That’s a lot of reading. Well I can do that I guess. I am an honor student.

Savior #1: Oh no, that’s not all. You need to go to church, give lots of money, help in youth group, run audio or video, usher and that kind of stuff.

Jim: Well, that sounds like a lot.

Savior #1: Well you DO want to be saved right?

Jim: Yeah okay. Well, let’s move on. Savior #2, “What does it take to get to heaven?”

Savior #2: Oh that’s easy! Just do good things!

Jim: Really? I do that a lot. Like what and how much?

Savior #2: Anything you can think of – mowing your neighbor’s lawn, tipping your waitress well, saying “bless you” when someone sneezes. As far as how much, just make sure the good things you do outweigh the bad things.

Jim: And then I’m good to go?

Savior #2: Good to go!

Jim: Hmmm. Okay, that sounds easy enough. Savior #3, “I believe that God exists. Is this good enough to be saved?”

Savior #3: Of course, it’s all you need. Just acknowledge that I exist and that I created everything and I love you and that’s about it. You’re saved.

Jim: Well, what about the other stuff like your wrath and holiness?

Savior #3: Ah, that’s overrated. Just concentrate on my love. You know, like the Beatles said “Love, love, love – all you need is love.”

Jim: Wow. That’s something. Savior #4, “Let’s say I needed help with something big, would you help me out?”

Savior #4: Of course. You have cancer? I’m there. Friend is in a car crash, you can count on me. Lose your job, call on me!

Jim: I like the way that sounds. But let’s say I also needed help with the small things? Would you help me then? You know, like a test or I have a cold?

Savior #4: Oh no. Those are too small for me to concern myself with. You can surely handle those on your own. I mean, I love you and all but there are so many people in the world that need my help with bigger things than tests and colds. You know what I mean?

Jim: I guess, uh, ok well, Savior #5, “What do I need to do to become saved and go to heaven?

Savior #5: Nothing.

Jim: Wait, what? Nothing? Nothing at all?

Savior #5: Well, it’s kind of like this. I’ve done it all for you. I died for your sins so that you wouldn’t have to. I guess you do have to do something though.

Jim: I knew it. I knew there was a catch. What do I have to do? Give all my money away? Memorize the Bible? Never do something bad? What?

Savior #5: Believe and trust in me.

Jim: Wait? That’s it? But I thought…

Pat: (cuts him off) Well, that’s all the questions you get Jim. So, let’s find out which savior you’re going to choose......... Right after the commercial break!

(Cue Music)
